    Give a little bit
gives me always a big smile. It feels really good and has also some nice old fashioned studio tricks:
    – Very nice usage of stereo
    – Love the way the song starts and when bass and drums come along the sound of singing gets straight to your face simultaneously. gives me goose bumps.

.. of course most of the thrill is something that is just because of the band and their way to play & sing + the instruments they use.. like that 12 string strumming.

This was released in 1977 but written much earlier. It has the old school, early 70s feel, but has a bit more fidelity. It was a giant hit in the States.

    Ain’t no sunshine
Really beutiful again.. but very few things could actually help us as the style and instruments are so different. I always liked the way they used strings in 70’s. Just listened this morning Nick Drakes: river man. ..

but what strikes here is the way the drums are mixed. Again nice stereo separation.. maybe in the era when people listens so much with the head phones this kind of stereo separation is considered almost as too much. I don’t know. I think this mix sounds good anyway.

+ the singing has beautiful echo on it.
.. and there is a lot of hiss.

This was the song, I think, that Jaakko was saying he was trying to drum like for one of our songs.

Yeah, really good reverb on the vocals, and the rest really has a top-class 70s R&B feel and sound, despite the hiss.

Again acoustic strumming .. thing we don’t have in any of the songs yet.. might consider somewhere but i don’t know .. kind of start to like our own sound too. of our songs at the moment maybe in airlplane there could be a possibility to acoustic strumming.. never thought it though. by the way here is 2 acoustic guitars: left and right 🙂
Harmonica and constant harmonies in singing gives this Neil Young feeling.
there is something dry and vintage compression thing going on the drums and bass that is nice in a way.
again a lot of hiss.. maybe that’s the thing 😀

The more I listen carefully to harmonies, the more I understand. But it is probably dumb to try to compare our very early attempts at it with the people that invented the process.

There are specific techniques in mixing backing vocals (that link I sent you, Erkki, is a start), where they use compression upon reverb, and also pull out certain frequencies in EQ and take away others. Also, they use reverb on only some of the backing vocals, leaving others almost totally dry.

And some use the flange and/or chorus effects to smush them all together to make a lovely, warm bath.

.. yes never forget the analog choruses and flangers those are the sweeteners.
a lot of energy has been put to the singing.. hmm maybe there is some double tracking and tape flanging.. or maybe just excellent singing. a nice echo too again.

Yes, think of Abba! How did they get that mixed vocal sound??

I think I saw some documentary about it a loooong time ago.
